The week before the official beginning of the ACS meeting on March 26, but after many governance activities had already kicked off, Atlanta hosted one of the four regions of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. On Thursday evening, Duke played LSU and Texas played West Virginia.
As many people at ACS know, the editor-in-chief of C&EN (me) bleeds Duke blue, so when Dean Smith, vice president of sales and marketing for the Publications Division (but no relation to the renowned UNC basketball coach), asked if I would join him and his father for the games on Thursday, I jumped at the chance. As anyone who follows college sports knows, it was not a happy evening for Duke and West Virginia fans.
Heartbroken, I did not attend the Saturday afternoon game between Texas and LSU. However, spotted at the game, and captured by digital camera by Dean, were these four young men who, we discovered, were also attending the ACS meeting. The T-shirts were designed in the mid-1990s for the Kids & Chemistry program by ACS’s Denise Creech and Michael Tinnesand.—Rudy Baum, filed at 9:18 AM EST
